Welcome to Joseph Darlington's Website
I promise to stop writing about myself in the third-person from here on in.
I am very pleased to announce that I am FINALLY working on a new novel. It’s a retelling of the minotaur myth set in a small town in the north of England. The provisional title is Spare the Glass Picnic, though I’ll probably change that. The first chapter is available here, with subsequent chapters appearing on what I hope is to be a weekly basis. If you like what you read, please follow me on twitter for updates.
If you can’t wait for the next instalment, or just want to know more about the world of Avon Murray, check out the limited edition short story collection Avon Murray. A high quality pocketsize hardback featuring ten stories unavailable elsewhere. It's also on amazon, if you've a voucher or something, but I'd recommend bigcartel as they don't take as big a slice.
As for the rest of the website, well I hope it serves as representative portfolio of my work. I’m a lifelong resident of the North and I think it’s fair to say that it’s to Manchester in particular that I owe the “quaint but grim” stuff I write about; or “Powerhouse Gothic”, as I like to call it. I’ve some short stories here, and poetry here, as well as a section on my academic work here.
Over the years I’ve also written two unpublished novels, two unperformed plays, a number of short films that actually got made, three albums (two with Homeless Joe and one with Al and the Q’aidas), some political pamphlets and tons of other crap which is of no use to anybody.
Thanks very much for visiting and I hope you are mildly amused.
[Oh, and the Josef spelling is for screenwriting credits - in case you were wondering]
