Welcome to the site of Josef A Darlington

Here you will find a selection of poetry and short stories that give a sample of what I write. It’s a sort of online portfolio, a “best of” selection; that way the rest of my work can safely turn to mulch where it lies forgotten in various plastic bags.

I myself am currently working at a PhD on British experimental literature from the 1960s and 70s at Salford University. I live in West Didsbury, Manchester and write mostly for the reason that I can’t seem to stop.

I draw inspiration from the works of William S Burroughs, CG Jung, Ann Quin, Jorge Luis Borges, Rabelais, Angela Carter and William Wordsworth. Whether that improves the quality of my writing is yet to be seen…

Apart from the small selection I have available on here, I have also written tons of poetry and stories, a few short films and a radio play that lasted one scene and then I threw it in the bin. I have finished a rather tongue-in-cheek detective novel, Hot Tulips, that I hope to send to publishers one of these days, and an experimental novella entitled Slumber.

I’m also working on ‘the Jerusalem Artichoke project’ (that has lasted seven years and remains nothing but a title and a huge pile of miscellaneous papers), a play written almost entirely in puns called The Top Hat Cat's Club and a new novel, Spare the Glass Picnic, based on the minotaur myth set in a village in the north of England.

Thanks very much for visiting and I hope you are mildly amused.

Oh, and I no longer have time to write in my blog. See long list of time consuming activities above for more details. Between you and me, it was all nonsense anyway...
